Pathogenesys has developed and will continue to develop proprietary diagnostic technologies to fulfill the goal of bettering the lives of cancer victims. We have submitted patents covering a novel Serum DNA assay and a new technology that will facilitate drug discovery and monitoring chemoresistance in cancer patients.
There are also several technologies also under development at Pathogenesys that would facilitate the discovery and characterization of genetic mutations associated with various forms of cancer. One technology will reduce the cost and time of In Situ Hybridization Analysis for the characterization of gene amplifications and deletions, and may prove useful in the identification of specific mutations. A novel approach for screening specific gene sub-sites for point mutations, deletions or insertions is under development and could greatly facilitate the discovery of mutations that might effect drug effects. One specific area of interest is the tyrosine kinase domain of the Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor. Likely significant mutations will be rare. A approach that effectively screens patient tumors for any mutation within this region will reduce the costs and speed analysis of patient material in the conduct of a clinical trial. As these technologies mature, Pathogenesys will also be looking for partners or investors interested in commercialization of specific tests that may prove useful in drug discovery and development efforts.
Since access to biologic material from patients during clinical trials is often difficult to obtain, Pathogenesys is also developing serum assays that could be useful in segregating patients into groups based upon the genetic make-up of their tumors. An inexpensive approach toward genetic characterization of serum DNA using specifically designed panels PCR tests will be used to characterize patients. These tests could prove useful in defining various response or resistant groups.
Finally, specific biomarker algorithms that use information from several immunohistochemical tests, tumor morphology and patient demographics have been identified and will continue to be developed and validated. The make-up of some of these algorithms will be held as proprietary and leveraged to further business development efforts.
